This group’s name was chosen for its near-perfect graphic symmetry in lower case helvetican, lack of any real meaning and for subliminal similarity to “sex”. DUH!
This is a unique experimental synth collective from NEW JERSEY!!! really.. Not too much info on this innocent gem of a release from 1980, but how brilliant it is. Reverby minimal synth with kooky female / male vocals.
Nothing Synthy here... Just some straight up New Wave elle' ! Got to mix it up...
Two bands here attest to the influence of Blondie on the music of the late 70’s/early 80’s.
The Passengers
The Passengers never had the backing of a major label, but this demo (issued on a French CD shows that Australia had better bands than Icehouse available for export in ’79. The striking Angie Pepper, who from the look of the booklet often performed in a bra.
The Expressos used the Girl Group meets the New Wave shtick but never sounded derivative. In fact the song-writing here equals a lot of Blondie’s late 70’s peak. This is so damn good!
You all the story of this (in)famous bootleg. These are the demos that the Pistols recorded before the departure of bassist Glen Matlock. I, like a lot of people, prefer these versions to those on "Nevermind the Bullocks." These recordings are raw and unpolished, but give a good insight into what this band was capable of.
Skwee is a musical style, from the Nordic countries of Sweden and Finland. Skweee combines simple lo-fi synth leads and basslines with funk, hip-hop r'n'b or soul-like rhythms, overall rendering a stripped-down lofi funky that reminds me the music of John Carpenter or the minimal funk of Grime.
These Shock Wave series are a decent attempt to recycle some bits of The Flexipop series and a touch of the Some Bizzare & New Wave Complex with some original demos.
Its a good thing to have for all Coldwave/Synth Pop collectors. I took the liberty to come up with all the artwork for this series of 10 volumes. In this post you will have Volumes 1-5..
This is the Ice Age was Martha and the Muffins' third album, released on LP and cassette in 1981. The track "Women Around the World at Work" was released as a single in the UK and Canada.
The album was a debut for Daniel Lanois as producer; he would later be discovered by Brian Eno and produce for artists as diverse as U2, Bob Dylan, and Dashboard Confessional.
With a diverse selection of Ambient / New wave / and synthy sounds this is a gem for all collectors.
The cover image was taken by Muffins' guitarist Mark Gane from an apartment he was living in on Bloor Street in Toronto. It depicts the Bank of Montreal tower over a building in poor repair.
After being unavailable for over 20 years, this much sought after album was finally re-released on CD in 2005 by EMI Canada and includes two bonus tracks that were not on the original release.
That's right! whip out the Linoleum and get winded cause its time to electronically break!

Vicious Pink /Phenomena were a synthpop band, formed in Leeds, UK in 1981, it consisted of two members, singer Josephine Warden, who was half-English-half-French, and keyboardist Brian Moss. The duo started out as backing vocalists for Soft Cell. Josephine Warden went on to marry a top London music lawyer, and Brian Moss carried on in the music industry, now keyboard player for artist Mirazma. I just don't understand why there is no proper release for this ingenious band...

Of A Mesh Were New York City's most famous Goth Drone band in the '80's, Of a Mesh featured the dramatic crooning of Alan Dollgener duetting with Samara's haunting violin, guitarist Ellen Watkins, bassist Gregory Kostroff, and drummer Osamu, and in June 1986, that quintet released the classic 12-inch EP "Of a Mesh" (recorded by Martin Bisi) on their own Black Afternoon Records. Of a Mesh formed in the fall of 1983 in New York City, taking their name from Maya Deren's 1943 avant-garde silent film Meshes of the Afternoon. Sadly in 1995, Dollgener released a solo album "Fish Dreams" (MMG) under the name Reverb Sleep, but he died that October 22, battling AIDS. I went to see them at least 5 times, and they were really amazing, they did have the potential to be something bigger. They were so nice too. I had the honor of working with Alan at Tower Records, he was so hot!

Invisible aliens in a tiny flying saucer come to Earth looking for heroin. They land on top of a New York apartment inhabited by a drug dealer and her female, androgynous, bisexual nymphomaniac lover, a fashion model. The aliens soon find the human pheromones created in the brain during orgasm preferable to heroin, and the model's casual sex partners begin to disappear. This increasingly bizarre scenario is observed by a lonely woman in the building across the street, a German scientist who is following the aliens, and an equally androgynous, drug-addicted male model. (Both models are played by Anne Carlisle) In a BRILLIANT performance.

Cabaret Voltaire (CV) started out in the mid-70's as industrial noise outfit. There was a brief industrial-disco phase for CV in the the mid-80's, followed by house. At the dawn of a new decade, Cabaret Voltaire, now Stephen Mallinder and Richard H. Kirk (Chris Watson left to take a more scientific curve with experimental/noise group 'The Hafler Trio'), started to ease from techno/bleep into trance/ambient. The results were quite startling and Cabaret Voltaire finally regained the attention they deserved. At the height of the trance/ambient wave, Cabaret Voltaire parted ways. While Mallinder went off to Australia to study, Kirk continues on with solo projects (Richard Kirk, Sandoz, etc).
1985's Arm of the Lord (reissued on CD as The Covenant, The Sword and the Arm of the Lord) proves that no band could be so productive without a few tricks up its sleeve. Titled after an American neo-Nazi religious zealot organization, the record crossbreeds trademark electro-rhythm attack with odd breaks, varied tempos, the return of eerie found voices, unpolished production and harsh dissonance. The Arm of the Lord finds Cabaret Voltaire at the crossroads between their early experimentalism and all out dance and nascent techno, and certainly much further down that latter road than Red Mecca and 2 X 45 or even Micro-Phonies. But as 'normal' as it sounds, it's much weirder than most eighties pop records with many samples of Charles Manson, movie clips and lots of signature Cab-Volt noise. "I Want You" and "Motion Rotation" actually have catchy melodies...
