Smersh

Beat studio guru Mike Mangino (Pink Noise, Pop-Tarts) and Chris Shepard (Pop-Tarts) formed Smersh as an experimental big-beat techno/industrial project and began releasing cassettes in 1981. Smersh recorded improvised cuts every Monday night, released countless cassettes on their own label, Atlas King, and were featured on more compilations than you can track down. They never played live, never played the same track more than once.

The sound is a lush hybrid of techno, industrial, dance, and experimental.. Sometimes easy, sometime not... As Mr Mutant said : Dance music for cyborgs on acid! YES!!!

"In January 1980 Ralf Wehowsky founded with 2 friends his first group ever. The secret name of the group was Progressive Disco, abbreviated P.D. Influences came from punk, experimental and psychedelic rock as well as from new classical music, industrial and disco, which were melted into their own style, using tapes as well as conventional rock instrumentation.

P.D. suffered from permanent personnel changes. At the end of 1980 it was clear that Ralf Wehowsky was the only member who was to stay continuously. So he decided to change the name of the group in a way that showed continuation as well as discontinuity. Therefore the name was "doubled" by adding the number of the letters (P being the 16Th, D the fourth letter of the alphabet).

One of the members at that time was Achim Szepanski, who left after a few months because he had to follow his studies. Meanwhile he has founded the successful techno label "Mille Plateaux".

The sound is intelligent experimental synth, with a touch of the angry screams and mutterings of German youth. Some of these songs definitely remind me of a twisted cousin of the Liquid Sky soundtrack..

Suzan Pitt

Suzan Pitt is an American film animator and painter, whose surreal, psychological animated films and paintings have been acclaimed and exhibited worldwide. She teaches at the Experimental Animation program at California Institute of the Arts.

Her film Asparagus showed with David Lynch's Eraserhead for two years on the midnight movie circuit.

She is soo tripped out!!

Pekinška Patka were a Yugoslav (Serbian) punk/new-wave band formed in 1978. Pekinška Patka was one of the first authentic punk bands in Yugoslavia. Their sound is reminiscent to Joy Division infused with a British injection of Punk, a great sound it is.. I wish I had the first 1980 LP Plitka Poezija!! Hint Hint..

Eleven Pond

From Upstate NY we have Eleven Pond. This was another rare purchase from Bleeker Bob's (only 500 pressed), I was talked into getting this by Bob himself claiming it was the best dark synth he had ever heard.. When I got home.. I didn't like it so much... I recently released it from the racks, and found it to be pretty good. The production is a bit tinny, but it's some good Coldwave, synthy New Wave. You can hear all the influences, too many to mention, but I know you'll like it!

Here we have Darker Skratcher released on The Los Angeles Free Music Society label. A 14 song comp of pure kooky music experimentation that is so L.A. this Lp runs the gamut of No Wave, industrial, Zappa-esque electronic gumbo, and just some of the craziest shit you ever heard!

The Los Angeles Free Music Society (LAFMS) has been, since the early 1970s, the banner heading of a loose collective of experimental musicians in Los Angeles, California who were joined by an aesthetic based around radical experimentation of sound and voice..

Jackson started her career in the mid 70's in Munich, Germany as a science fiction short films producer, also working in music with Giorgio Moroder and Keith Forsey. She released her first single "Man of a Man" in 1978, followed by her biggest single ever - "Automatic Lover" (also 1978) which became a worldwide hit, reaching #4 on the British charts for more than 8 weeks, #1 in Brazil, Argentina, Italy, France, Spain, Turkey, Germany, Japan ...

In mid 1978, she released her first album "Cosmic Curves" which can be quite Kitchy with full on Disco cheeze madness, but yet charming displays of synth pop, sleeze
and Metal synth. Dee D married and had a son and now lives in Turin, Italy, reportedly running a record label D.D.E (Divine Dance Experience), where she produces Hip Hop, Garage and Trance artists...

Dee D. Jackson is one of the reigning Queens of Mutant Disco.

Claustrofobia

From Spain we have Claustrofobia, hailed to be the big breakout in the early 80's, but never did. Their record company marketed them as a rock band, but they were not the "banda de rock" everyone thought, but a great Coldwave synth trio. They disbanded in 1992, but left an important Coldwave footprint to this genre.

When I saw this 7" at a great record store in South Florida (Yesterday & Today)I flipped, this was during my Raver period, and I was a HUGE Orb fan. So I saw this Alex Fergusson 7" and thought it was a lost Orb gem... DUH!!!! I was probably stoned, I got my Alex's mixed up. So Alex Fergusson was an original member of Psychic TV, and the dude from the Orb was Alex Paterson!! So I had a moment!

So it turns out that this is an awesome Synth Pop gem!

Yes the 1980 Canadian horror/slasher film starring Leslie Nielsen and Jamie Lee Curtis.

BUT

The full on Disco soundtrack is composed by Paul Zaza and Carl Zittrer. Who? I don't know either, but this ultra slick cheeze sleeze Disco bombardment is an awesome assult to your senses like a big splash of Paco Robanne!
