Didier Marouani (born in 1952 in Monaco) is a French composer and musician of Algerian descent. He is one of the pioneers in the Electronic music genre.

Didier started his career as pop singer under the pseudonym ECAMA, which released the hit single "Magic Fly". Later he participated in such well-known bands as Space and Paris-France-Transit. He sold over 12 millions records all over the world.
Throughout the 1980s, Didier Marouani & SPACE gained quite a large popularity in France and many European socialist republics (such as Poland, Czechoslovakia, Romania and Soviet Union).

The two Japanese women (Kazuko Hohki, Kazumi Taguchi) who comprise Frank Chickens are both proud of and amused by musically mixing synth-pop (created in the main by the English writing/production team of Steve Beresford and David Toop) with funk and jazz, the Chickens also incorporate Japanese musical traditions.

Very entertaining.

Always in danger of being viewed strictly as a novelty act, Frank Chickens manage to avoid such trappings by remaining uniquely bizarre.

Their album with the same title was released in summer of '81.12 wonderful,fresh,cool and punk-like songs with monotnous vocals,keyboards and strange sound effects.The band counts as an uncommon group from the German new wave period,their music is close to Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle and Fehlfarben.It is a wonderful mixture that makes you dance and dream.This made Deo the most sophisticated punkavantgarde band.Their funny texts and usage were impressive indeed.Their producer was the famous Klaus Schulze from Tangerine Dream and from Innovative Communication ,who is is one of the pioneers of electronic music. - http://www.ichwillspass.de

In the year 1977,a new electronic music formation was born:ADN' ckrystall.Together with Vangelis and Tim Blake, mastermind érick Moncollin was jamming in the summer that year, playing a prototyp of the legendary Korg ms-20.After studies of music and sound at shool art in Toulouse(France)he started in '78 to play live in smaller clubs and on events, together with a parrallel member of the group GonG, he continued his musical experiments. In 1982, the first vinyl album was released "jazz'mad" (actually cheer with tracks 'cocaina vitamina-Haschisch-TamTam samba' In 1984, the famous 'IN-Edit'7"ep including the underground hit 'Deutsch Napalm' was released (actually at 230 euros !!!! on e-bay ? and jazz'mad at 90eur. I REALLY HALLUCINE !!!) In '87 a flexi disc in art'mag was released 'Museum ep'. end '85 to '88 ADN was a real band ( see Kernkrach 7"16, with 2 tracks from 1985, and "the lost tapes"'comp/06 on minimal wave for '86 track under ADN'la catastrophe'name), a very ltd tape follows in '91 "la couleur du vent" and in 2005 ADN new lp was good welcome ! However, Frederic Mirage could also be a pseudonym of Bernard Estardy, as some tracks on this album were apparently taken from Universal Energy's album.

Parade Ground were pioneers in EBM and Coldwave (hi Craig),the band consisting of Belgian brothers Pierre and Jean-Marc Pauly.

In 1983 they released their debut EP Moans on the Sly on the New Dance Label. This began their on-going collaboration with producer Daniel B, a member of the seminal Front 242.

The following year they released Man in a Trance (which I don't have..HELP!!) on Front 242's label Mask including the pulsating track The Net. Continuing with more EPs they released 'Dual Perspective', one side produced by Daniel B, the other side produced by Colin Newman of Wire, then came Strange World 12", title-song that was included on the definitive compilation album This is Electronic Body Music in 1987, giving way to their first full length album, entitled Cut Up (1988), followed by a tour in Germany and Sweden . In 1993 , the brothers wrote and composed the vocals on two Front 242 albums 'Up evil' and 'Off'. Original extreme noise industrial sound without concessions...

Judy Nylon is an American artist who moved to London in the very early 1970s. She was half of the punk act called Snatch, which also featured Patti Palladin. Only those who lived in New York and London during the era that spanned glam and punk are likely to appreciate her importance, most of which isn't preserved in print, vinyl, or CD. In terms of cultural significance, she has been ranked with Patti Smith, The Raincoats, Chrissie Hynde, of The Pretenders, The Slits, Lydia Lunch, Siouxsie Sioux of Siouxsie & the Banshees and even Nico.
Her Pal Judy record was released in 1982 and has been described as "a classic rainy day bit of sound and song to drift away to"[who?]. It was co-produced by Judy Nylon and Adrian Sherwood of On-U Sound and Tackhead.
She is the Judy in Brian Eno's Back In Judy's Jungle[citation needed]. Nylon is responsible for inspiring the Eno version of ambient music[citation needed] (the back cover of his Discreet Music contains his version of how this happened). - Wikipedia®

Look HERE Their fans include such luminaries as Herbie Hancock, Afrika Bambaataa, Sven Vath and Kraftwerk. Since the 60's they had allowed themselves to become more and more inspired by the Caribbean sounds of steeldrum and Soca, and developed their own brand of Soca influenced funky disco electro. Also look out for Supersempfft.. even more of the same dudes with guests doing that Calypso synth thang! I just might post that up soon.

Beginning as Ash Ra Tempel, later Ashra, then solo as Manuel Göttsching was part of some of the most notable German groups of the 1970s and 80s, as well as a solo artist, he is one of the most important guitarists of the Kosmische Musik genre. He also participated in the Cosmic Jokers (Dieter Dierks, Gille Lettmann, Harald Grosskopf, Jürgen Dollase, Klaus Schulze) sessions. His style and technique influenced dozens of artists in the post-Eno ambient and New Age scenes in the 1980s and 1990s. His 1984 album E2-E4 has also been influential in the development of house and electronic music in general, a classic in beautifully orchestrated Minimal Synth.

Wolfgang Riechmann started his musical career in 1966.
After playing in a school band with Michael Rother and Wolfgang Flür, later famous with Kraftwerk and Neu, he then became member of an other Düsseldorf (Germany) located band called "Streetmark" .
It was end of 1977 when Riechmann started working on his solo career.
The result was the LP "Wunderbar" which was released on SKY Records.
Unfortunately he did not experience the release.
Riechmann was killed - without any reason - by two drunk guys, who stabbed him to death...

3 Teens Kill 4 (3TK4) were a New York City (East Village) band from the early 80's.

Members included Hattie Hathaway and the late David Wojnarowicz

David Wojnarowicz (1954 - 1992) was a painter, photographer, writer, filmmaker, musician, performance artist, and political activist in many different arenas, including LBGT rights & issues, AIDS, and Free Speech politics. He was internationally prominent in the New York City art world and active in the performance art, poetry, and underground/experimental music scene between 1978 and 1992, and continues to receive more and more posthumous recognition for his artistic and literary output.

Great No Wave/Minimal Art Synth sound.

This was one of my first purchases during my 1st week working over at Tower Records 4th & Broadway...

Pas de Deux was a project of Walter Verdin, an art-student who already had a history in music with Specimen & The Rizikoos and as a solo-artist.

PDD represented Belgium for the 1983 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest.. The band ended third from last. Nonetheless 'Rendez-Vous' became a big summer hit in Belgium that year. Pas De Deux released one mini-album and a couple of singles.

Always fascinated by disco music, Marzio Vincenzi, convinced his friend Mauro Malavasi to produce, in 1978, his first record "I'm A Man". The title track, a remake of a Steve Winwoood's piece, had an immediate, favorable outcome. Micky Mike

Real name. Marcel Thiel.

Died, age 52, on 23rd of May 2009 in a Brussels hospital from complications after surgery and a long history of health problems.

Snowy Red was the one-man electronic band of the former Chainsaw guitarist, Micky Mike. With the "Vision" LP and some tracks on the "The Beat Is Over" LP, Snowy Red was, for a brief moment only, a band. After the Belgian New Beat boom, Snowy Red called it quits and Micky Mike disappeared, only for the band to resurface again in 2004 as a duo (with a guitarist) at the Belgian Independent Music festival.

He gave us the classic synth jam Euroshima.

Mark Shreeve

Mark Shreeve is a British pioneer of melodic electronic music. He debuted is music on cassettes of complex electronics redolent of early 80's Tangerine Dream coupled with a melodic pop sensibility..

He also wrote many of Samantha Fox's mid-80s hits!

Part of the intensity of this music is found in tunes like Flagg and The Stand which show that Shreeve was reading horror writer Steven King which no doubt added a bit of darkness and force to the presentation. Another interesting note is that one song, Icon is co-written by Chris Franke who also plays on the song. During that time Franke was still a member of the legendary German band, Tangerine Dream.

This was probably the first over $20.00 CD I purchased back in 1989. Who cares!

The Elephant Table Album: a compilation of difficult music was a 1983 Compilation album, released on Xtract Records. The Double album was compiled by music journalist Dave Henderson following a series of articles by him in Sounds, the British music paper. It was reissued on CD by the same label in 1989, but with the tracks sourced from the vinyl release rather than the master tape,[1] and the number of tracks reduced from 21 to 17.[2] The tracks consisted of a selection by lesser-known experimental, industrial and electronic artists of the period... During the 1980s, he founded a record label, Private Music, specializing in instrumental music in a style popularly referred to as New Age. Artists signed to the label included Yanni, Patrick O'Hearn, Jerry Goodman, Suzanne Ciani, and former bandmates Tangerine Dream. The label was eventually sold to Windham Hill Records' parent company, BMG, who continue to distribute some of the back catalogue of its more successful artists. Baumann has since kept a low profile from the music business. YAWN!

Michael Sembello was born in Philadelphia in 1954. A talented songwriter, guitar player and vocalist, he started his career joining Stevie Wonder's band in the first seventies. Later on a became a well known session player for the likes of Sergio mendes, the Jackson 5, Stephen Bishop, Randy Crawford, David Sanborn and many others.

So hop on your electronic Yacht, and and whip out the Vienna sausages, cause Sembello turned out the electro jams that mom would have approved.

It brought back memories of sneaking in a flask of booze to the downstairs lounge at The Monster in NYC, and dancing like Al Pacino in the movie Crusing with dirty old men.. a couple of days after high school graduation.
That was the sound, and I was sucked in.. Deep down DIRTTY Hi-NRG.. I can smell the Amyl nitrite..

I cannot live without Dave Ball!!

As a student of Leeds Polytechnic Fine Arts University, renaissance man Ball experimented with electronic sounds and sleeze..

He met fellow student Marc Almond, who, taken with Ball's unique take on avant-garde electronic soundscapes, asked him to help in developing music to complement his performance art pieces. The two cut a 4-track EP, funded by Ball, entitled Mutant Moments, and were soon signed to the small label Some Bizarre Records. Working alongside Almond, who by this time had taken on the role of lead singer and lyricist at Ball's suggestion, the band achieved massive success with their cover of Gloria Jones's Tainted Love, which reached #1 in seventeen different countries and #8 in the U.S., where it stayed on the charts for 43 weeks, holding a then Guinness World Record for the longest such stay and becoming the biggest-selling UK single of 1981.

Ball then went on to release a solo album entitled In Strict Tempo, featuring Gavin Friday of The Virgin Prunes, and Genesis P Orridge of Throbbing Gristle. He then went on to produce electronic dance music records alongside producer Ingo Vauk and collaborator Richard Norris. Ball eventually teamed with Norris to form the techno group The Grid, and regrouped with Almond for a Soft Cell tour..

ROCKETS history starts in Paris (France), in the year 1972, when they were known under the name CRYSTAL. In 1974, they changed their name to ROCKET MEN (or ROCKETTERS) as five aliens, bald, with grey eyes, silver skin and space suits, recording the single 'Rocket Man' produced by Claude Lemoine, who would become their producer 'til 1983.
In 1975, they changed their name in ROCKETS and recorded a single 'Future woman'. In 1976, their first LP entitled, 'Rockets' was released in France, and the group launched a series of phantasmagoric live shows which involved vocoder, lasers, coloured lights, smoke and a bazooka fighting flames three.

Here is a great release by Digital Emotion, a Dutch Electronic Disco trio.. Had a minor hit with "Don't Stop". Loads of vocorders, tin-y beats, and pure cheezy spacey electro brilliance..

Born in 1946 Hong-Kong.. from a French-English father and an Asian-Russian mother.
She was raised in South of France and moved to Paris to make a career in painting.
She became a top model and one of Salvador Dali's Muses. She posed as the "lady with the panther" on the famous cover of Roxy Music's "For Your Pleasure" album of 1973. Then David Bowie fell in love with her and she began her career as a disco singer. To create more hype about her they invented the story that she is a transexual!!
Since the early 80's she has presented TV broadcast in Italy, France and Germany.

Amanda's music is a hypnotic force to be reckoned with. That deep trance inducing voice, those swirly sleezy disco beats. How can you go wrong?

This awesome deep dark gem was recorded for Throbbing Gristle's Industrial Records label in 1979. I picked this up in the mid 80's at Bleeker Bob's during my hardcore TG/Psychic TV phase.. There was this tall blond skinhead who was in the group "God is my Co-pilot" who worked at BB's, swore up and down that I needed it for my collection. I wasn't a fan at the initial listening, but I recently really grew to enjoy the complexities of this coldnoise treasure!

Sounds like Soft Cell and Cabaret Voltaire recorded in the TG studios while tripping hard..

"Recording info. This album was recorded at home on 8 track equipment, provided for us by Industrial Records. It was produced in the two weeks dating 18th June to 2nd July. All blips and un seemly noises were generated by refridgerators & other domestic appliances & are intrinsic to the music. Kiem's sound is like a intelligent New Wave version of Test Dept, with some goofy humor thrown in the mix.

This french born synthesieur pumps out some dreamy kitchy disco jams that will delight most synth fans.

In collaboration with Korg, they created a new concept which had not existed ever before: Francis took the stage (Theatre des Champs Elysées – Paris) solo, surrounded by all his synthesizers (Bionic Orchestra, 1979). He will be the go-to man for both Roland and Ensoniq trades.

Francis wasted little time getting to meet another master of the synthesizer: Jean Michel Jarre, through their mutual friend Michel Geiss. Meeting in 1979 for the concert in Place de La Concorde, Paris, they began a long collaboration. Since the 1986 Rendez-vous Houston concert, Francis has been at Jarre’s side on grand stages.

About 4 or 5 years ago my good friend Forrest was relocating to NYC, and was crashing in my place for a while. We found ourselves watching TV at like 7am in the morning, and came across this unheard of gem called "The Apple". WE WERE MESMERIZED!!! What the hell were we watching? This 70's futuristic musical set in the 90's, with a pure cheesy disco Wave soundtrack, and over the top acting, costumes, and makeup..

So much more happens..

I think I'd like to believe that we started this mini craze from our word of mouth. Prior to us watching this movie on cable it has basically been an unheard of movie that no one knew about. Now there is a full out BIM parties (you will know soon), and a total re-interest in this forgotten gem.

After breaking his steps as a solo-artist, Udo Hanten collaborated with Ulrich Weber and brought up the band "YOU". Hanten on synths and Weber on electric guitar. In December 1978, first songs were presented in Berlin at the "Paragon" studio of Peter Baumann. Later a conversation with Conny Plank tipped the scales, to do a production by them self.

The first album "Electric Day" was recorded between May and August 1979 at Udo Hanten's Spiegeltraum Studio (2 floors over North Sea). The production emerged from a collaboration between Udo Hanten, Ulrich Weber and Harald Grosskopf (at that time living in West-Berlin and member of Ashra). Albin Meskes completed the party during the production.

HG owned an eight-track tape recorder (which he got from Klaus Schulze) while Hanten supplied a couple of synthesizers and sequencers. In this recording environment, the team produced two records: Harald Grosskopf's debut LP "Synthesist" and "Electric Day".

Model Citizens were an awesome kooky No Wave group from Brooklyn, New York, and recorded this solitary 7 inch with producer/legend John Cale in 1979. Model Citizens split into two bands - The Dance, and Polyrock. The New York version of "The B-52's".

From early (No)Wave to Dark/Gothic Underground, from EBM via Techno to Electroclash - and back again!

In 1981, the german band NO MORE landet an underground hit with SUICIDE COMMANDO, which in the following years spread internationally like a virus regardless of genre and scene.

Whether in the New Yorker Limelight or in an indie disco in the Ruhrgebiet, at the Love Parade in Berlin or the Parisian in-shop Colette, whether in a techno club in Tokyo or at the Sonar Festival in Barcelona:
SUICIDE COMMANDO was played everywhere and reached a status that made the title interesting for prominent remixers.
Not in the least thanks to the interpretation by DJ Hell or Echopark (Torsten Stenzel, Moguai), SUICIDE COMMANDO is as topical today as it was 25 years ago.

HG were a UK dance troop famous for their appearances on the TV series The Kenny Everett Video Show ( I loved that damn show!)

Hot Gossip scored a pop hit in 1978 with I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper, a disco track featuring Sarah Brightman on lead vocal. They went on to record an album in the early 1980s, Geisha Boys and Temple Girls, produced by the former Human League and then current Heaven 17/BEF member Martyn Ware. The album was a commercial failure. I'D FUCKIN KILL TO HEAR THAT ALBUM.. If anyone has it.. PLEASE!!!

On the day I was on the show, Hot Butter performed... I remember this old man in a sound booth popping his mouth like Zachary Smith from Lost in Space.. I was mesmerised, and had to have the album...

So I got it here for you!

Hot Butter was an instrumental group of session players and was fronted by the keyboard player Stan Free.
Its a Moogy kitch experience, and will bring great memories for the over 40 foogies (like me)!.

Holger Czukay, Jah Wobble, Jaki Liebezeit

Holger Czukay studied under Karlheinz Stockhausen from 1963-1966 and co-founded the influential rock group Can in 1968.

Jaki Liebezeit the legendary drummer of Can.

Jah Wobble eventually got his start with John Lydon's post-Sex Pistols group Public Image Ltd (PiL). He left PiL in 1980 and has since collaborated with a wide variety of musicians.

These three geniuses got together in Can's studio "Inner Space" and pumped out this dubby, No Wave, electronic masterpiece.

This music will make you imagine a million places, mystery films, markets, chance encounters, half open doors and exotic worlds. But most importantly your hips and your feet will move to primal beats of Jaki and Wobbles outer space fat dub bass!

Dramatis was essentially the backup band for Gary Numan in the late 70's, early 80's. Gary Numan appears only on the track "Love Needs No Disguise"...
This masterpiece of kitch synth has a little of everything — mock symphonics, electro-disco, to mainstream pop rock.

An enjoyable listen, it will leave you chuckling with delight!

Landscape began to experiment with computer programmed music and electronic drums in the late 1970s making records in the emerging genres of electronic dance music and synthpop. This Britishish electro/pop/jazz band from London led by Richard Burgess, producer of Visage, King and Spandau Ballet and onetime soft-rocker (as a member of Easy Street).. After the release of their 3rd LP, Landscape became a trio and recorded under the name Landscape III.

The sound is high-tech synth, with a touch of slick and polished Disco. Perfect for sophisticated dance parties, but the songs retain a lyrical cleverness that prevents total bland-out. Not quite an '80s version of 10cc, Landscape played rhythmic rock, but with a heavy dose of jazzy fusion.

I recently found this Swedish No Wave / New Wave gem by trolling the newsgroups searching for obscurities...

I couldn't find much info on this Swedish delight except that Hans Thunberg of Elegi produced this album.

The sound is deep and dark at times, then moments of jittery abstract wave come through the mix.

A great find!!

When Hil released this synth pop gem in the early 80's, it was definitely overlooked!

Produced by the legendary Stephen Hague (New Order, Pet Shop Boys) this record is definitely one of the shiniest gems of the era.

Sadly Hilary passed away August 2007.

If you were an avid WLIR listener in the eighties you will recognize two of these tunes as screamers of the week..

Two very infectious ladies who put out two of the wacky yet intelligent singles ever!

Rhoda Dakar was a influential voice of the early Ska scene. A member of the legendary all girl Ska group The Bodysnatchers, and a integral part of The Special A.K.A.

Vivien Goldman was a music journalist, and she started to record when "PiL snuck her into the Manor (studios)" during the Flowers Of Romance sessions in late 1980, with PiL also reportedly paying for most of the recording costs. It seems this is how Lydon earned his co-producer credit.

Howard Devoto was there when the Sex Pistols first performed, and the rest is history..

Later Devoto helped formed Buzzcocks, Luxuria, Magazine..

In 1983 Devoto released a lovely synth pop album, that surprised us all...

Very moody, atmospheric, and lush, this classic synth nugget is essential for the Chardonnay synth fans.

Screamers were a punk rock group active in the Los Angeles, California area in the late 1970s.

Fronted by the openly gay Tomata du Plenty, Screamers influenced most of the west coast punk bands of that era. More synth driven than any other "punk" bands, Screamers have a unique aggro sound of their own. Officially the pioneers of a genre now known as synthpunk.

Du Plenty (born David Xavier Harrigan in 1948, died 2000), a veteran of the theatrical drag troupes The Cockettes and Ze Whiz Kidz, first collaborated with the Screamers' principal songwriter Tommy Gear (then using the name "Melba Toast") in Seattle in 1975, as The Tupperwares. The lineup of the Tupperwares included Gear, Du Plenty, and Rio de Janeiro on vocals, backed by Pam Lillig and Ben Rabinowitz (later of The Girls), as well as Bill Rieflin (later of The Blackouts and Ministry) and a teenage Eldon Hoke (later known as "El Duce" of The Mentors).

Though they developed a substantial following and generated considerable press coverage, the Screamers never released a record.

Produced By Geza X, recorded on a 4-track. The ideal intro to the Screamers. A high pitched whine is audible, but does not distract from overall good sound quality. A valid complaint, though, is the splitting of "122 Hours of Fear" in half over the seam of both sides of the record.
